New Year's Eve

Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Canberra

Say goodbye to the year that was and welcome in the New Year with a night of celebration, connection and joy. Pack your own or purchase a picnic hamper and enjoy fireworks displays and roving buskers along the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra’s first major event since lockdown. With synchronised fireworks displays lighting up the Canberra skies at 9pm and midnight, this will be an event for the whole family and is being delivered in a self-managed Covid safe manner. Fireworks will be launching from three locations across Lake Burley Griffin, giving you the opportunity to take advantage of the variety of lakeside or mountain top vantage points across the city.

Or see in the New Year in style at one of Canberra’s many lakeside venues, pop up locations along the foreshore or city rooftop hotels. Canberra tourism and hospitality businesses need you, so take advantage of the range of accommodation and dining specials being offered.

Date: 31 December 2021

Time: Buskers from 6pm. Fireworks at 9pm and midnight.

Location: Fireworks displays will be launched from East, West and Central Basins of Lake Burley Griffin

The health and safety of everyone at New Year’s Eve is our priority. When viewing the fireworks, find a spot where you and your family or group can be COVID safe.  We encourage everyone to spread out, and don’t forget to use the CheckIn CBR app. To ensure the health and safety of all attendees, stay home when unwell, maintain physical distancing, and ensure healthy hygiene practices, both in the lead up to and at the event.

Opportunities for Industry Involvement

We are inviting the local hospitality industry and businesses to be part of this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations by developing promotional activities, activations, pop up events and special packages targeting event attendees, both Canberra residents and interstate visitors, who wish to picnic at the lake prior to viewing the fireworks, or dine or stay overnight in the city.
