Overview

Peter Weir helped kickstart the Australian New Wave, an era of resurgence in the worldwide popularity of Australian cinema, with iconic films including Picnic at Hanging Rock.

His fascination with dislocation and disorientation links works of diverse genres – from rom-coms to crime thrillers, domestic dramas to historical epics like Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. This 'fish-out-of-water' theme is explicit in movies like The Plumber, The Truman Show, Green Card and Witness. In films like Fearless and Dead Poets Society, his protagonists explore the sense that those around them do not appreciate the profound significance of existence.

Peter Weir remains one of the biggest names in Hollywood and the recipient of an honorary Oscar in 2022.

The Peter Weir Spotlight at the NFSA includes a film pass to seven of his films.
