Overview

A boy. Six horses. One unspeakable act of violence.
Enter the mind where love and worship blur.

Peter Shaffer's Equus is a searing psychological classic — an electrifying play about passion, faith and desire. Confronting, provocative and deeply human, it is designed to shock, excite and captivate.

When psychiatrist Dr Martin Dysart is asked to treat Alan Strang, a disturbed teenager accused of blinding six horses, what begins as a clinical investigation spirals into a haunting exploration of worship, repression and the search for meaning in a sterile world.

Blending realism with surrealism, Equus delves into the contradictions of the human condition — our hunger for purpose, our capacity for obsession, and the chaos that follows when passion is denied. It exposes the secret fears of both patient and doctor: Alan, the isolated boy whose religious and sexual desires merge into dangerous devotion, and Dysart, the man forced to confront the emptiness of his own existence.

Directed by Anne Somes and presented by Free-Rain Theatre Company, Equus promises an intense, unsettling and unforgettable theatrical experience — one that challenges, provokes, and lingers long after the lights fade.
