Chasing Alice

Overview
"Chasing Alice" is an exhibition by Annie Lok featuring the latest works in her ongoing series titled "Rabbit Holes".
Each piece features a female protagonist, the 'Alice', as she navigates her way through these carefully constructed compositions – imbued with symmetry, balance, texture and colour theory – by utilising the tools available in photo editing software to manipulate personal and found imagery through either filtering, warping, stretching, or layering, all in a bid to invent a landscape for each 'Alice' to discover.
"Rabbit Holes" becomes twofold: influenced by Lok's academic interests, tackling the 'human experience' through social, political and art historical lenses, and as an escape from the reality of her discomfort. A workplace accident in 2021 left Lok with two ruptured discs in her lower spine and neuropathy, leaving Lok to contend with chronic pain and physical limitations even to this day.
"Rabbit Holes" are designed to test your physical, intellectual and emotive boundaries when thrust into familiar and unfamiliar spaces: does trauma response activate or is it a welcomed escape from reality? Only the viewer will know how the Rabbit Hole serves them; if it gives them what they need, affirms their beliefs, or takes them away into the unexpected.
