Overview

With this new body of work, Dörte Conroy introduces collaged imagery drawn from a collection of documentary photography spanning the late nineteenth century through to the 1990s.

Removed from the original context, these images carry traces of lived history, memory and observation. Dörte combines these photographic fragments with vivid blocks of colour, creating a visual tension between representation and abstraction. The paper collage elements introduce a subtle physical texture that interrupts and softens the intensity of the colour and fields.

This allows the two materials to exist in quiet dialogue rather than in opposition. Together, the historical imagery and saturated colour, form a layered surface where past and present, image and pigment co exist.
