Overview

Workshop: Sashiko and Boro Techniques with Canberra Quilters at Canberra Museum and Gallery offers visitors a hands-on introduction to traditional Japanese stitching practices.

Led by Wendy Saclier from Canberra Quilters, the experience begins with a guided exploration of Stitching Stories: 50 Years of Canberra Quilters. Participants gain insight into the exhibition before moving into a practical workshop setting.

Sashiko and Boro are decorative stitching techniques developed to mend and strengthen worn cloth. Over time, these methods have become recognised for their distinctive patterns and quiet beauty. Participants learn how these techniques can be used to repair, reinforce and transform textiles.

All materials are provided. Visitors are also welcome to bring a garment or textile for mending and creative reuse.

Suitable for all experience levels, this workshop combines exhibition viewing with practical making. It offers a thoughtful introduction to textile traditions shaped by care, resourcefulness and creativity.
