Overview

This exhibition presents recent works by Canberra artist and Strathnairn studio holder Katie Hayne. Continuing her long-term interest in recording Canberra's urban environment, Hayne documents the rapidly changing landscapes of Canberra's north-west corridor. Drawing on her observations of construction sites in the emerging neighbourhoods of Whitlam and Ginninderry, these paintings capture landscapes in transition at the city's edge.

In her latest series, Hayne incorporates fluorescent grounds to reference the visual language of construction—high-visibility clothing, plastic packaging, survey markers and building materials. Layering imagery of new suburbs, Hayne's paintings explore the intersections of human habitation, aspiration and environmental impact.

About Katie Hayne

Katie Hayne completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the University of South Australia and returned to her art practice part-time in 2017 to complete a Masters by Research at the ANU School of Art & Design. For her Masters project Hayne began documenting the changing urban fabric of Canberra through observational painting, video and installation. She continues to build on her practice believing that observation through realist painting remains relevant in contemporary art and that these contemplations can reveal some of the contradictions of our consumer society.
