Eligibility criteria

Is your event eligible?

It is important to determine if your event is eligible for listing in the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) prior to loading your event information. Events which are deemed to be ineligible will be rejected as part of the quality assurance process.

For events to be listing in ATDW they must fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • Classes, Lessons, Workshops and Talks
  • Community Event
  • Concert or Performance
  • Exhibitions and Shows
  • Festivals and Celebrations
  • Food and Wine
  • Markets
  • Sporting Events

More information about each event category is provided in the Event Categories section below.

All events must have:

  • Broad public appeal. Events for special interest groups or specific demographics including school fetes, church fairs, fundraisers, personal/professional development courses, and business/networking events are not eligible. A launch does not constitute an event and should not be submitted as a standalone event or included in another event listing’s description.
  • Clear start and end dates. Permanent exhibitions are not eligible.
  • Programming or components beyond a business’ typical offering. Events offered regularly as part of a business’ standard operation are ineligible i.e. weekly pottery workshops, sports broadcasts at an eatery.

Event categories

Listed events must fall into one or more of the following categories:

Classes, Lessons, Workshops and Talks

List one off educational events here including art workshops, cooking classes/lessons and motivational speakers. These events must highlight experiences specific to Canberra.

Community Event

Eligible community events must be open to the general public, in a public venue. They must have broad public appeal.

Events exclusively for special interest groups or specific demographics including school fetes, church fairs, small fundraisers, personal/professional development courses, and business/networking events are not eligible. e.g. bake sales, school concerts, conferences.

Concert or Performance

A concert or performance may include plays, musical theatre shows, opera, stand-up comedy, circus performances, puppetry, music concerts of any genre, dance, and live shows e.g. The Wiggles Live, Disney on Ice, Top Gear Live. One-off touring film screenings will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Exhibitions and Shows

Temporary or one-off exhibits can be listed e.g. Open Garden Days, Discovering Ancient Egypt exhibition.

Permanent exhibitions are ineligible.

Eligible shows include Easter Shows, Royal Shows, Agricultural Shows, and Lifestyle Shows e.g. Caravan and Camping/Craft/Health & Wellness/Food & Wine Expos etc. The term ‘show’ does not refer to musical shows – list those under Concert/Performance.

Festivals and Celebrations

A celebration or commemoration event may include Australia Day activities, ANZAC Day, New Year’s Eve, Easter Egg hunt, Olympic Athletes Welcome Home Parade, Open Days etc.

If your event is a festival comprising multiple sub-events, you are only permitted to list the festival event as a whole. You are not allowed to list the individual events that make up the festival’s program. i.e. a film festival can create one listing for the festival, not a listing for each screening.

Users who are interested in the festival will be able to click through to your own website where they can be shown the entire program of events.

Food and Wine

Food and wine events listed here will have food, wine, or other beverages as the core component of the event e.g. a one-off themed dinner/lunch/performance at a winery or a truffle hunt.

Restaurants who promote a specialised menu for events such as Mother’s Day or spring or Cheese and Wine Fridays, will not be listed as this does not constitute an event. Restaurants may wish to list applicable offerings as deals under their venue listing.

Markets

Market events include one -off, irregular, or themed markets in temporary locations. Market events may include produce, crafts, special night markets, for example, a Christmas-themed market.

The event needs to have high potential to attract interstate/overseas visitors e.g. PM’s XI, International tournaments, Tour Down Under, Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, V8 Supercars, World Cup Cricket etc. Interstate matches are permissible for all sporting codes. Local club sports are not eligible. Broadcasting of regular sports events are also not eligible.
